THROWBACK TO DRUMMING XXL AND THE POWERFUL STATEMENT OF THE 62 STUDENTS

Last week on Friday May 31st, Drumming XXL premiered in the very centre of Brussels, in open air, as part of Europalia art2gether.

After the entrancing performances of Drumming XXL, the 62 students delivered a gripping speech calling out for equality, solidarity with all victims of injustice, humanity, and cease fire...wherever it is. 62 citizens with different backgrounds united and calling out for a world without genocides, a world in which the integrity of people and fundamental rights are inalienable.
A powerful statement, followed by a minute of silence, shared with the moved audience present.
We would like to share their poignant call.

Tine Declerck captured the magic…as always.

Good evening, everybody.

After the performance you have just seen, we want to address you as individuals.
We are 62 citizens with different backgrounds all gathered here. Being united together here is a privilege, we have the chance to experience. This project is a moment of celebration, however we cannot ignore the atrocities and the systemic suffering that other people in the world undergo right now.

How do we cope with the horrible images that reach us daily? How do we cope with violence being silenced, justified and instrumentalised through media’s and social media.
To what extent can art break complicit silence?
How could we encourage inclusivity and respect diversity in our communities?

What responsibility do we have in our daily life to change the current global situation? What will we leave to future generations?
What actions could we make as individuals?

How can we continue to celebrate life while still acknowledging and mourning all those who lose it unfairly?

We therefore want to express our solidarity with Palestinians, Ukrainians, Congoleses, Haitians, Sudaneses, people rejected at borders, those discriminated against everyday and all the victims of injustices. Injustices that are so numerous we can’t name them all.

We want a world in which the integrity of people and fundamental rights are inalienable. We want a world without genocides. Cease indifference, let’s not stop denouncing. Cease normalized complicity, let’s organize collectively. Cease fire, wherever it is.

To let these concerns resonate, we now invite you to share a moment of silence together for 1 minute.

*1min*

Merci (de votre attention)
